Santa Clarita, CA – For the second time in 100 days, Governor Newsom has pardoned or commuted the sentences of another series of felons. This time, 34 were pardoned or commuted, of which 15 had been convicted of murder or served as an accomplice to the victim’s death. At the end of March, Newsom had taken similar action with the pardon and/or commutation of sentences for over 2 dozen other felons, including a dozen convicted of murder or related crimes. In response to Newsom\’s action, 38th Assembly District Republican candidate Suzette Valladares stated, “Releasing murderers into the community at such a volatile time, while police department funding is threatened to be slashed in many cities such as Los Angeles, is a slap in the face to victims of violent crimes.” Valladares expressed deep concern over the action the Governor has taken in these past 100 days, and especially now, when law and order has been tenuously balanced amidst riots, protests, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Valladares’ family has been the victim of violent crime. She has been an outspoken advocate for victims, and is strongly against defunding or abolishing police. |
